Follow-up about the earthquake

Family and friends are reporting they're fine. My laptop isn't, unfortunately; its hard drive didn't survive the shaking. Fortunately, my automatic online backup system seems to have saved all the files. (Yay, Dropbox!) I also have my fiction manually backed up elsewhere, as extra insurance.

I stll have my iPod Touch (which has survived me dropping it five times, so a piddly thing like an earthquake isn't going to bother it). I can't do layout on it, but I can proofread stories till I get a new laptop.

I'm sorry your laptop didn't survive.

I still have to thank you for that little gift you sent me in May, too.

In the meantime, did you catch this trailer?

Ah, the iPod Touch... isn't it wonderful? I think I do more reading on my iPod Touch now than I do on my computer! Much easier to curl up in bed with, and doesn't make my head hurt worse when I have a migraine!

Sorry your laptop didn't make it, but I'm glad you and Noakes did! And yay for file backups!!

Does the laptop turn on at all? As someone who was just down the road from you, I'd have to say the shaking and vibrating we had was not so terribly different than driving over bumpy dirty roads for a few miles at 20 mph, and many laptops are built to withstand that. Check the power source, to be sure it didn't get damaged?

Power source is fine; the laptop turns on but can't find the operating system. From the clicking sound the laptop makes, Noakes thinks the head may have collapsed onto the hard drive. The laptop stopped functioning (and started clicking) two minutes after I started using it after the earthquake; too big a coincidence for this to be unconnected with the earthquake. Maybe my laptop is the type that gets carsick. :)
